A variety of creatures populate Jennie Smith's delicately rendered graphite and watercolor drawings. Shells, mammals and birds, both real and imagined, appear alone, airborne or piled together in fantastically stratified ecosystems. Expressing ideas of shelter and survival, Smith's drawings suggest narratives of collective action at the same time as calling for ecological awareness and social change.
Smith was born in 1981 in San Francisco, California where she currently lives and works. She received her BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. This is Smith's first solo exhibition. Her previous projects include the Bulletin Board at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2006); her work was also featured in this year's Whitney Biennial, New York where is has received great acclaim. Smith's work is in the collections of The Drawing Center, New York and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
